If relocating was that easy, wouldn’t all of us be doing it?

Moving across one of our beloved vast oceans is no easy task. Heck, just moving to another part of the town you live in can take some time and usually comes with a few headaches!Making sure you have all of your belongings in order, have thrown out anything you don’t want and have enough boxes to hold everything is paramount to your moving success.

However, when moving overseas many people do not take the time to properly research the best method for actually shipping everything to your new home overseas.

Communication is key

Once you have decided to make the move, make sure you sit down with your family and discuss the implications in detail. Let’s say you’re moving to Hawaii; this might make the move easier on everyone! Not everyone in the family would be keen to leave, so make sure you don’t break the news to them just days before.

Take the time to discuss the reasons of why you want to relocate and also the possible opportunities of relocating overseas – don’t hurry this process; this needs to be done well to avoid issues down the road.

Moreover, make sure you have considered all important aspects such as what school your kids will go to, the financials, the climate and culture of the new country,the rates of shipping, etc. Bringing them onto the discussion table and valuing their viewpoints will ensure support from them.

What to take along

Decide what things to take based on their urgency. Thing such as clothes, medication, pets, passports, work visas, etc, are things you will need as soon as you land. Take all of these things along when flying.

Then there are things that are less urgent of a need, such as your vehicle, furniture, kitchen appliances etc., which you can trust with freight. However, shipping your household items is not as easy as you might think.

What company should you choose?

Start from choosing a shipping company; consider the price estimates, the size of the containers, which route to take, etc. For example, how do you plan on shipping a car or other big items such as furniture, boat or other very large items? Not so easy, is it?

Going online and contacting several different companies is a great place to start. It will help you get an idea of their service and rates and you can begin to get a feel about which company makes you feel most comfortable shipping your personal belongings.

Information about the new country

Get accustomed to the new country’s language climate, crime rates, and cultures beforehand. This will help you to fit in more easily.

Research schools in the area for your children
Take language courses if necessary
Cancel all your monthly or bi-yearly subscriptions
Acquire permissions to bring pets along, if any
Notify change of address for bills and local businesses
Keep check of your travelling insurance
Keep account of taxes and payments

The key to a successful relocation is Proper Management.

Everything from the beginning till the end must be planned out and managed wisely. That way, moving overseas may seem less of an ordeal. Lastly, always remember, this might be your chance to start a new life – it’s a doorway to new possibilities!
